Claire M Marchand

March 1, 1935 ~ April 13, 2018 (age 83)

Claire M. Marchand

Claire M. (Lemoine) Marchand, 83, passed away peacefully at the Elaine Center in Hadley on the evening of April 13, 2018, after spending the day with her four sons, other family members, and friends. She was born in Chicopee to the late Theodore and Cecile (Nadeau) Lemoine on March 1, 1935.

With her late husband, Andrew J. Marchand (deceased 2003), she traveled to and lived on U.S. Air Force bases in Las Vegas; Casablanca, Morocco; Valdosta, Georgia; and Cheyenne, Wyoming, before settling in Chicopee after Andrew retired at Westover in 1966. Claire was well-known and respected for her ability to make those trips with her four very active sons on long-distance airplane and train rides. She loved accumulating photos of her family from those trips, as well as telling stories about those adventures and how the family survived during Andrew's long absences while he was posted to foreign duty for the Air Force. She reveled in celebrating holidays and other events with her family and friends, and was always fond of pets, especially her dogs. She enjoyed playing bingo with her many friends, a passion that started in the 1950s with her mother Cecile in Chicopee. Claire also took great pride in her five grandsons, and one great-granddaughter.

Claire was a parishioner of St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church in Chicopee, and practiced her faith regularly, attending televised Masses when illness or weather prevented her from leaving home to attend church events. For many years, she worked as a member of the Altar Guild at the former Nativity, B.V.M. Church in Chicopee.

Claire is survived by her four sons and their families: Andrew (Pamela) of Tennessee; Gerard (Jeannette) of Westhampton; Mark (Elisa Gallaro) of Clifton Park, N.Y.; and Joel (Claudia Attardi) of South Hadley. Her five grandsons are: Andrew of Tennessee, Jacques and Grant of Westhampton, and Daniel and Gregory from the Boston area. Her great-granddaughter Coral lives in Tennessee. Claire was also close to Claudia's daughters, Lyndsey and Kristin.

Claire is also survived by her brother Ronald, who lives in southern California, and several nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her brother Raymond, her sister Lorraine, and beloved daughter-in-law Nancy (Redmond) Marchand.

Calling hours will be from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday, April 19 at the Brunelle Funeral Home, 811 Chicopee St., Chicopee, Mass.
