Walter S. Grochowalski

HOLYOKE – Walter S. Grochowalski, 89, died Friday, June 18, 2010, at the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke. He was born in Holyoke on June 23, 1920, to the late Franciszek and Maryanna (Orlinska) Grochowalski. Walter attended schools in Holyoke and was a former parishioner of Mater Dolorosa Church. Walter served our country in the United States Army during WWII. While in the military he earned the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. After his discharge, Walter made his home in Chicopee and worked for Charles Koegel and Sons for thirty years, until his retirement. He was a former member of the Polish National Club in Chicopee. In his leisure time, Walter enjoyed cooking and gardening. He leaves to cherish his memory, his son, John W. Grochowalski and his wife, Linda of Shrewsbury; his daughter, Ann Downey of Des Moines, IA; his brother, John Grochowalski of Poland; his eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Johanna, Jason, Steve, David, Heather, Mark and Katie; his two great grandchildren, Olivia and Sam and a very special cousin, Mary Kosiba of Chicopee. A daughter, Serena Wenninger and a son, Walter Grochowalski, Jr., predeceased him. Family and friends are asked to gather on Friday, June 25, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. for a Liturgy of Christian Burial at Mater Dolorosa Church, Maple St. Holyoke, MA. Burial will military honors will follow in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. There are no calling hours.
