Thomas E. Carney 1917 � 2009 CHICOPEE � Tom Carney, 92, died Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at Redstone Rehab in East Longmeadow, Mass. He was born in Somerville, Mass., March 7, 1917 to the late Thomas F. and Elizabeth (Keefe) Carney where he was educated in local schools. He was a longtime parishioner of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Chicopee. He proudly enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in Dec. 1943 and was discharged Feb. 1946. His time during WWII was spent in the Pacific, most notably the battle of Iwo Jima. Tom began working at Savage Arms Co. in Chicopee Falls, Ma. During the building of the Mass Turnpike, he worked for DeFilice Construction as a heavy equipment operator. Upon its completion he was a driver for Holyoke Street Railway for many years and later retired from the former Savage Arms in Westfield. Tom was an active participant at the Chicopee Senior Center and was honored as Volunteer of the Year. Tom was predeceased by his wife Edna (Douville) in 1996 after over sixty years of marriage. He will be sadly missed by his son Thomas G. Carney of Warren, Vt.; his longtime companion, Marie Leduc of Aldenville; many nieces and nephews and extended family including Donald and Lena Douville of Willimansett, Ma. There will be a Service of Remembrance on Friday, April 17 at 10:00 a.m. at the Brunelle Funeral Home, 811 Chicopee St, Chicopee. Burial will follow in Precious Blood Cemetery in South Hadley. Calling hours will precede the service from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made in Tom�s memory, to the Holyoke Visiting Nurse Association, Inc.
