Sylvia Priscilla Szlachetka- Mata

CHICOPEE- It is with deep sadness to announce that Sylvia Szlachetka- Mata went to see the lord on April 7, 2018 after a long illness at her home in Lathrop, CA. Born on November 5, 1934 to the proud parents of Ignatius and Margaret (Czerwonka) Szlachetka in Chicopee, MA. She also had two brothers and two sisters that included: her older brother Francis & (Eva) Szlachetka of Colchester, CT; younger sister Barbara Kalil of W. Springfield, MA; younger sister Kathy & (Richard) Brown of Granby, MA and younger brother, Carl & (Diane) Szlachetka of Hyde Park, VT. She also leaves an aunt, Kathe Czerwonka of South Deerfield, MA as well as multiple nieces, nephews and many friends both in New England and California. A graduate of Chicopee High, she enlisted in the U.S. Navy where she served proudly for four years. The Navy brought her to Northern California where she made it her home in Hayward, CA. The Navy also brought her to the future love of her life, best friend and husband for over 40 years, Paul Fredrick Mata. Over the course of those years Sylvia started a beauty/hairstyling business in Oakland, CA, that she owned and operated. Looking for something new, she studied nursing and received her LVN nursing license where she worked with several home care patients and later, in medical record keeping. But the joy of her first vocation, hairstyling called her back to start another small business for seniors in Hayward where she worked up until retirement in 1992. Sylvia and her husband Paul also relocated to Lathrop, CA at that time. Her pleasures and hobbies were her love of gardening. Tai Chi, water color painting & sketching and she also enjoyed going to Oakland A’s games, especially when they played the Red Sox. She loved traveling and most of all visiting with family and friends most especially in New England. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, April 19, 2018 from 9:30-10:30AM in Brunelle Funeral Home, 811 Chicopee St., Chicopee, MA 01013 and be followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11AM in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 56 St. Anthony St., Chicopee.
