ROGER N. GILBERT 1923 � 2011 Chicopee � Roger N. Gilbert, 87, WWII Veteran and longtime resident of the Fairview section of Chicopee died on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at the Holyoke Soldiers� Home. A former employee of the Springfield Post Office, Roger retired in 1980 after 30 years of dedicated service. He was a communicant of St. Ann�s Church, Fairview. He served in the 400th Anti-Aircraft Artillery in Sicily-Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno and Rhineland. He received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal w/ four Battle Stars, the WWII Victory Medal and he was honorably discharged as a Corporal T/5. Roger served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. In 1939, was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and was a Past Commander of the Fairview American Legion Post # 438. He was a past president of the Chicopee Chapter of the AARP and received several awards for his volunteer activities at the Northampton VA Medical Center in Leeds and at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Roger was born in Allenstown, NH and has resided in Holyoke and Fairview since 1945. He leaves behind his wife of 65 years, Antoinette (Joyal) Gilbert of Chicopee; his daughter, Diane Hammond of New Mexico; three sisters and a brother, Theresa Campbell, Elizabeth Plante and Rita Lemay and Lucien Gilbert all of NH. He also leaves his grandson, Reuben Fling of TX. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, February 7, 2011 at 10AM in St. Anne�s Church, 30 College St., Chicopee.
