Chicopee – Dennis Eric Carter, 74, of Chicopee, passed away peacefully after a long illness on Saturday August 3, 2024 at the Veterans Home in Holyoke. Dennis was born in Holyoke on December 3, 1949, son of the late Robert L. Carter and Claire G. (Hebert) Carter. He grew up in the Willimansett section of Chicopee, and was a 1968 graduate of Chicopee High School. He later completed his Associate’s Degree at Holyoke Community College.
Dennis served his country in the U.S. Army from 1970 – 1972, where he was stationed in Schweinfurt, Germany. He received an honorable discharge and married his wife of 52 years, Alice V. (Forgette) Carter in September of 1972. Dennis continued proudly serving his country as a Sergeant First Class, HHC 2 BN 104 INF in the Massachusetts Army National Guard before retiring from the military in 1991.
Dennis was employed as a Packaging Designer at Covidien in Chicopee before he retired due to illness. He spent many days of his childhood playing baseball with his friends at Nash Park, and went on to play basketball and baseball in high school and in college. He carried that love of sports throughout his life, rooting for the Celtics, Red Sox, Patriots, and Bruins.
Dennis will be dearly missed by his beloved wife, Alice of Chicopee; his two sons, Jeffrey Carter of Chicopee and Shawn Carter and his wife Sara of West Springfield; three siblings, David Carter and his wife Sheila, Robert Carter and his wife Dee, and Pamala Kranz and her husband William; sister-in-law, Judy Carter, as well as by several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Ronald Carter and by his sister, Gail Ritchie.
Calling hours for Dennis will be held on Sunday, August 11th from 2-5 PM at the Brunelle Funeral Home, 811 Chicopee St., Chicopee, MA. A funeral home service will be held on Monday, August 12th at 9:30 AM at the Brunelle Funeral Home, followed by committal services with Military Honors in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main St. in Agawam.
