Chicopee – Bernardino “Ben” Gomes, Sr., 77, died at home surrounded by his beloved family on Tuesday, February 16, 2010. He was a lifelong Chicopee resident, born on March 12, 1932, a son of the late Alfredo and Marcelina (Rebeiro) Gomes, Sr. He attended local schools and retired as a courier from the former Van Guard Bank. Ben loved fishing, card games, long car rides, and dominoes. He will be remembered as a happy go lucky, very sweet, sensitive, and gentle man. He was the husband of the late Elaine (Stone) Gomes, who died in 1984. He is survived by his son, Bernie Jr. and his wife Nancy of Chicopee, and his daughter, Kim Beebe and her husband Alan of Colorado. He also leaves two brothers, Alfredo Gomes, Jr., Manuel Gomes, and his sister, Lena Jillson, all of Chicopee. He will be sadly missed by two grandchildren, Seth and Alyssa Beebe and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers, Diamond, Julio, Antonio, and Joaquim, and his sister Mary Gomes. Funeral services are Monday, February 22 at 9am from the Brunelle Funeral Home, 811 Chicopee St. followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10am at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 63 South St., Chicopee. Burial will follow in Saint Rose de Lima Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are on Sunday, February 21 from 4 – 8pm. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to Mercy Hospice, 1236 Main St., Holyoke, MA 01040.
