Bernard J. Nyzio

December 11, 1917 — March 8, 2013

CHICOPEE- Bernard J, Nyzio, 95, resident here and a former 33 year East Longmeadow resident on Shaker Rd. passed away at his home by his dear Alice Cote after a short illness. He was born in Newark, NJ on December 11, 1917 a son of the late Benedict and Victoria (Stawarz) Nyzio. He was educated in Hatfield Schools and enlisted in the US Army during WWII and served honorably in Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. Bernard was a lifelong farmer spent most of his life tending to tobacco and potatoes in East Longmeadow for Wet Stone Tobacco and Consolidated Cigar. Later in life he primarily farmed potatoes and was a skilled at growing spuds and loved his mashed potatoes with gravy, with lumps of course. He was a member of the American Legion Posts in East Longmeadow and Hatfield. Bernard is survived by his beloved companion of over 34 years, Alice (Goulet)Cote of Chicopee; his son, Bernard J. Nyzio, Jr. and his wife Lisa of Pennsylvania; two grandchildren, Karen Cavannah of Monson, MA; Bernard J. Nyzio, III of TX; 3 great grandchildren, Deven Cavannah and Dylan Cavannah both of Monson and Teagan Nyzio of TX . Bernard was also predeceased by two sisters, Stella Backus and Helen Pashek. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday morning, March 12, 2013 from 9- 10:30 AM at Brunelle Funeral Home, 811 Chicopee St., Chicopee, MA 01013. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will follow at 11AM in St. Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan St., Chicopee, MA. The burial with military honor will follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery, 1601 State St., Spfld, MA 01109.
