Daniel M. Doherty Jr.

HOLYOKE- Daniel M. Doherty, Jr., 56, a longtime Holyoke resident and former Holyoke High School Teacher passed away on Monday, June 3, 2013 at his home. Dan was born in Holyoke, MA on April 5, 1957 a son of the late Daniel M. Doherty, Sr. and June Barcome and was a 1975 Holyoke High School Graduate. He always loved the outdoors and loved 4 wheeling in his jeep, camping, fishing and hiking. Furthering his education in History and Mathematics, Dan received his B.A. from Westfield State College and later completed his M.A. in History from his alma mater. He taught for several years at Holyoke High School before moving to Flint, Michigan where he taught for many years before retiring in 2006 from the Flint Public School System. After retirement, Dan and his beloved wife Cathy (Berk) Doherty moved back to Holyoke to care for his aging parents. Dan was an avid reader all of his life and also worked for many years at Chicopee State Park where he made several lifelong friends. In addition to his loving wife Cathy, Dan is survived by two daughters; Jodi Ross and her husband Jim of Holyoke and Jamie Harper of Michigan. Dan was a child at heart and loved spending time with his two grandchildren, James and Aiden Ross as well as his special godson, Nathaniel Del Valle. He will be missed dearly by his cousins, friends and colleagues especially April Falardeau, Rico Del Valle, Jack Lazanski, Ed Kosiorek and Gary Nihill. Dan was welcomed home into eternal rest and greeted by his parents and his brother, Dr. Kevin Doherty. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 9:30AM in Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton St., Holyoke.
